Catching the Sunrise
The sunrise is one of my favorite moments in the day. I am one of those people who is somewhat mesmerized by celestial things. The stars, moon, sun and sky captivate me. I’m rarely as still as I am in the moments when I’m focused on the sky. When I see the sun rise, the colors and intense brightness are a moment to behold.
And then its gone. Just like that.
One morning a few weeks ago, I wanted to take a picture of a sunrise that was stunning, and by the time I got around to it, the moment was over.
This morning, I was driving and saw the sun creeping up. I had no plans to take any pictures, but I had been lugging around my camera for “just-in-case” photo moments. I turned down a road that I’ve never driven on to chase the sun and get the best shot I could. I felt so good. It cemented a thought I’ve been brewing in my mind over the past couple of months:
Catching the sunrise is a bit like opportunity, a wonderful moment that if seized can change everything. But, it is only a moment, not a lifetime — it will not last forever. New opportunities may come, but that one is gone.
We get opportunities everyday, a little sunrise, a little window to something new and wonderful. So, what can we do to make sure we don’t miss out? These days I’m thinking seizing opportunity may be rooted in two things:
Cherishing each moment and treating it like a gift, not an entitlement.
Preparing yourself and staying ready for the moments that you most deeply desire.
